Starting a career as an SAP consultant can be exciting, but also full of unknowns. If you’re thinking about diving into this world, here are 10 things I wish someone had told me before I began.

1. SAP Is a Career, Not Just a Skill

I thought SAP would be a skill I’d add to my resume—turns out, it became my full-time profession. It’s not just a tool; it’s a long-term career path.

2. You Don’t Have to Be a Developer

There’s a myth that you need to code to work in SAP. Not true. Functional roles like SAP FICO, MM, SD, and SuccessFactors don’t require coding at all.

3. Certifications Help, but Experience Wins

Certifications open doors, but clients want people who can solve problems. Project experience—even in a demo environment—is gold.

4. Every Module Has Its Own World

Each SAP module is like a specialization in medicine. Choose one that matches your background, and go deep instead of jumping around.

5. You’ll Never Stop Learning

SAP keeps evolving—especially with S/4HANA, Fiori, and BTP. The learning never stops, and that’s actually a good thing if you love growth.

6. Soft Skills Are Just as Important

Clients care about how well you explain things, not just your technical skills. Communication, documentation, and presentation matter more than you think.

7. Job Titles Can Be Misleading

You might be called an “SAP Consultant,” but roles vary greatly—support, implementation, testing, pre-sales, etc. Ask detailed questions before taking a job.

8. Real Projects Are Very Different from Training

Training gives you the basics, but live projects introduce pressure, team dynamics, client expectations, and unknown problems. Be ready to adapt.

9. Networking Is a Game-Changer

Most great SAP job offers come through referrals. Attend webinars, join LinkedIn groups, and connect with experienced consultants.

10. You Can Freelance or Go Global

Once you gain 2–3 years of experience, you can take international projects, work remotely, or freelance on your own terms.

Becoming an SAP consultant is one of the smartest career decisions I made—but only after many ups and downs. If you’re starting out, learn from these points and build a smarter, faster, and more rewarding career path.
